In 4 of its Cultural Parks, Aragon is home to a formidable Heritage that includes more than 60 cavities with rock art (Palaeolithic, Levantine and Schematic), preserved in amazing landscapes that the human footprint has not yet significantly transformed. From the Pyrenees of Huesca to the Mediterranean mountain ranges of the Maestrazgo in Teruel, it is possible to visit enclaves that take us back to the times of the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic hunters, as well as those of the first Neolithic and Copper Age peasants; to the places where the first artists of Prehistory painted animals and signs, as well as scenes of hunters and shepherds.
Sites to visit: HUESCA: 1. Centro de Arte Rupestre de Colungo y abrigos rupestres del río Vero. TERUEL: 2. Centro de Arte Rupestre “Antonio Beltrán” en Ariño y abrigos rupestres del río Martín; 3. Senderos de Arte Rupestre Prehistórico de la Sierra de Albarracín (conjuntos de abrigos de Albarracín, Bezas y Tormón); 4. Abrigos rupestres del entorno de Santolea y de Mosqueruela, en el Maestrazgo, y 5. Abrigo de Val del Charco del Agua Amarga (Alcañiz).
Not to be missed: The rock sites in the 4 parks have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Mallata rock shelters (in an impressive spot on the Vero river), those of Alacón (with some of the most beautiful Levantine archers – Martín river), the rock shelters of “Los Toricos del Navazo”, “Barranco de las Olivanas” and “Cabras Blancas” (with large-scale Levantine paintings in white, red and black), and the Torico de Ladruñán rock shelter (Maestrazgo in Teruel) are particularly recommended.
How to get there: Starting from the Somontano de Huesca region (in the town of Colungo), the route then runs through the province of Teruel, via the towns of Albarracín, Bezas and Tormón (P.C. de la Sierra de Albarracín, Ariño (P.C. del Río Martín), Santolea and Mosqueruela in the Maestrazgo area of Teruel, and Alcañiz. The route lasts 5 days.
